Every software platform is adding AI features, and Klaviyo is no exception. Over the past two years, Klaviyo has introduced AI-powered subject line generation, content suggestions, smart send times, predictive analytics enhancements, and AI-assisted segmentation. Some of these features are genuinely useful. Others are not ready for prime time.
This guide provides an honest assessment of each AI feature in Klaviyo, based on our experience using them across client accounts through our Klaviyo email marketing services. No hype, just practical guidance on what to use and what to skip.
AI in Klaviyo: the current state
Klaviyo's AI features fall into three categories:
- Mature and reliable — Predictive analytics and smart send time. These have been refined over several years and deliver consistent value.
- Useful but limited — Subject line generation and AI segments. Good for brainstorming and quick wins but need human oversight.
- Early stage — Content generation and AI-assisted design. Still developing and not yet reliable enough for production use without heavy editing.
AI subject line generation
Klaviyo's AI subject line tool generates subject line suggestions based on your email content, your historical performance data, and patterns from high-performing ecommerce emails across the platform.
What it does well
- Generates multiple variations quickly, saving brainstorming time
- Identifies patterns from your best-performing subject lines
- Suggests approaches you might not have considered
Limitations
- Does not understand your brand voice or tone
- Can produce generic, template-sounding subject lines
- Does not account for current promotions, seasonal context, or cultural nuances
- Suggestions often need significant editing to feel authentic
Our recommendation
Use the AI as a brainstorming partner, not a replacement for human creativity. Generate five to ten suggestions, then pick the best direction and rewrite it in your brand voice. Always A/B test AI-generated subject lines against your own to measure the actual impact.
Smart send time optimisation
Smart send time is Klaviyo's most mature and consistently effective AI feature. It analyses each contact's historical engagement patterns and delivers emails at the time each individual is most likely to open and engage.
How it works
Instead of sending to your entire list at 10am, Klaviyo spreads delivery across a 24-hour window. Early birds get emails at 6am. Night owls get them at 10pm. Each person receives the email when they are most likely to check their inbox.
Results we see
- Open rate improvement of 5 to 15 per cent compared to fixed send times
- Click rate improvement of 3 to 8 per cent
- Most effective for large lists (10,000+ contacts) with diverse engagement patterns
- Less impactful for small, homogeneous lists or time-sensitive campaigns (flash sales)
Our recommendation
Use smart send time for all non-time-sensitive campaigns. The improvement is consistent and requires zero effort beyond enabling the feature. Do not use it for flash sales, event announcements, or other campaigns where timing is part of the message.
Predictive analytics
Klaviyo's predictive analytics are the platform's most strategically valuable AI feature. They include predicted customer lifetime value, predicted churn risk, predicted next order date, predicted gender, and expected date of next order.
Practical applications
- CLV-based segmentation — Identify your highest-value customers for VIP treatment and your lowest-value for targeted conversion efforts
- Churn prevention — Trigger proactive re-engagement flows for customers with rising churn risk scores
- Replenishment timing — Use predicted next order date to time replenishment reminders perfectly for each customer
- Resource allocation — Focus your most expensive marketing (personal outreach, premium gifts) on customers with the highest predicted CLV
Accuracy
Predictive analytics are directionally accurate, not precisely accurate. They are best used for segmentation (top 20 per cent vs bottom 20 per cent by CLV) rather than as exact forecasts. Accuracy improves with more data, so brands with 12+ months of order history and 1,000+ customers get the most reliable predictions.
AI content generation
Klaviyo's AI content generation helps write email body copy, product descriptions, and CTA text. It analyses your email history and brand data to suggest content.
Current state
The content generation is useful for overcoming writer's block and generating first drafts, but the output typically needs heavy editing. Common issues include generic language, American English defaults (problematic for UK brands), and a tendency to be verbose where brevity would be more effective.
Our recommendation
Use it for first drafts and brainstorming, but always rewrite in your brand voice before sending. Do not use AI-generated content verbatim for customer-facing emails. The time saved on the first draft is real, but the editing time is also real. For more on AI in ecommerce, see our AI guide.
AI-powered segments
Klaviyo's AI can suggest segments based on your data and goals. You describe what you want (show me customers likely to purchase in the next 30 days) and the AI builds the segment criteria.
Usefulness
This feature is helpful for marketers who are not comfortable building complex segment logic manually. It accelerates segment creation and can identify criteria you might not have thought of. However, always review the segment criteria the AI produces to ensure it makes sense for your specific business.
What actually works in practice
- Smart send time — Consistent, measurable improvement with zero effort. Use it.
- Predictive analytics for segmentation — Enables strategies that would be impossible to build manually. Use it.
- Subject line brainstorming — Saves time on ideation. Use it as a starting point.
- AI segments — Useful for quick segment creation. Review before deploying.
What to skip for now
- AI content generation for final copy — Not reliable enough for brand-sensitive communications. Use for drafts only.
- AI design suggestions — Too generic for brands with established design systems. Stick with your template library.
- Fully automated AI campaigns — AI cannot replace human judgement on campaign strategy, timing, and brand voice. Keep humans in the loop.
Klaviyo's AI features are a net positive for email marketers who use them appropriately. The key is knowing which features to rely on (predictive analytics, smart send time), which to use as starting points (subject lines, segments), and which to approach cautiously (content generation). Use AI as a tool, not a replacement for human strategy and creativity.
