Drip and Klaviyo both target ecommerce brands, but they serve different segments of the market. Klaviyo has positioned itself as the enterprise-grade email platform for serious ecommerce operators, whilst Drip has carved out a niche as a more accessible, user-friendly alternative for smaller brands and creators.

This comparison is based on our hands-on experience managing Klaviyo email marketing services for UK ecommerce brands and evaluating both platforms for client projects.

Platform overview

Klaviyo was built from the ground up for ecommerce email marketing. Every feature — from its data model to its template builder to its reporting — is designed around the ecommerce customer lifecycle. Drip started as an email automation tool for online businesses more broadly and has added ecommerce features over time.

Automation and flows

Both platforms offer visual workflow builders for email automation, but the depth and sophistication differ considerably.

Klaviyo flows

Klaviyo's flow builder supports complex multi-step automations with conditional splits based on profile properties, event data, predictive scores, segment membership, and custom logic. You can combine email and SMS in the same flow, use time delays and smart sending, and create branching logic that personalises the journey for each customer.

Drip workflows

Drip's workflow builder is clean and intuitive but less powerful than Klaviyo's. It handles standard ecommerce automations well (welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase) but lacks the granular conditional logic for advanced personalisation. If you need to split a flow based on predicted lifetime value or product category, Klaviyo is the better choice.

Segmentation capabilities

Segmentation is where Klaviyo pulls furthest ahead. Klaviyo lets you build segments based on virtually any combination of profile data, event data, predictive scores, and engagement metrics. Segments update in real time and can be used as flow triggers, campaign targets, and reporting filters.

Drip's segmentation is competent for basic use cases — purchase history, engagement level, tag-based segments — but cannot match Klaviyo's depth. If your marketing strategy relies on sophisticated segmentation (VIP tiers based on predicted CLV, product category affinity, RFM scoring), Klaviyo is the clear winner.

Shopify integration

Both platforms integrate with Shopify, but the depth of integration is significantly different.

Klaviyo's Shopify development integration syncs customer data, order history, product catalogues, website behaviour, and Shopify metafields in real time. It integrates with Shopify Flow, supports checkout extensibility, and can access Shopify's customer event APIs for advanced tracking.

Drip syncs basic ecommerce data (customers, orders, products) but does not offer Shopify Flow integration, metafield sync, or the same depth of event tracking. For brands running Shopify Plus, the gap between the two integrations is even wider.

Pricing comparison

Pricing is where Drip is most competitive. At comparable list sizes, Drip is slightly cheaper than Klaviyo, though the difference narrows as your list grows.

ContactsKlaviyo (approx.)Drip (approx.)
2,500£48/month£35/month
5,000£64/month£70/month
10,000£120/month£110/month
25,000£280/month£250/month
50,000£480/month£440/month

The pricing difference is modest. The more important question is which platform generates more revenue from your email marketing. If Klaviyo's superior segmentation and automation drive even a small improvement in conversion rate, the slightly higher cost pays for itself many times over.

Reporting and analytics

Klaviyo's reporting is more comprehensive than Drip's. It includes revenue attribution with configurable windows, flow-level and email-level performance metrics, predictive analytics (CLV, churn risk, next order date), benchmarking against similar brands, and deliverability monitoring.

Drip provides standard email marketing metrics (opens, clicks, conversions, revenue) but lacks predictive analytics, advanced cohort analysis, and the granular flow-level reporting that Klaviyo offers. For brands that make data-driven decisions about their email strategy, Klaviyo's reporting advantage is significant.

The verdict

For UK ecommerce brands on Shopify, Klaviyo is the stronger choice in almost every dimension. It offers deeper Shopify integration, more powerful automation, more sophisticated segmentation, better reporting, and native SMS — all designed specifically for ecommerce.

Drip is a good platform for smaller brands or those with simpler email marketing needs. Its interface is slightly more approachable, and it costs marginally less. But for brands that are serious about using email as a revenue channel — which should be every ecommerce brand — Klaviyo's capabilities justify the investment.

Choose Klaviyo if:

  • You run a Shopify or Shopify Plus store
  • Email is a significant revenue channel for your brand
  • You need advanced segmentation and predictive analytics
  • You want native SMS alongside email
  • You plan to scale beyond 10,000 contacts

Choose Drip if:

  • You have a smaller list and simpler email needs
  • You value simplicity over feature depth
  • You sell digital products or run a creator business alongside ecommerce
  • Budget is your primary constraint

Both platforms will help you send emails to your customers. The difference is in the sophistication of what you can do with customer data. For ecommerce brands that want to maximise email revenue, Klaviyo's deeper capabilities make it the better investment.
